Do you know what’s in your tampons or pads?

As a Generation Good by Seventh Generation community member I learned that the average woman uses 16,000 tampons over time, and that no federal law requires makers to disclose the ingredients in them. Protecting the right to know is important for all women in our lives. Learn more about this! #comeclean #generationgood

Unbelievably, no federal law exists which requires disclosure of ingredients in tampons and pads. This means women are left in the dark about what ingredients they are putting on some of the most sensitive and absorptive tissue on their body.

What’s the big deal anyway?

Vaginal tissue is very sensitive, which means we should be extra careful about what’s coming into contact with it. The walls of the vagina are filled with numerous blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, which allows for direct transfer of chemicals in to the circulatory system. In fact, there is considerable interest in vaginal drug delivery systems because the vagina is such an effective site to transfer drugs directly into the blood without being metabolized first.
One study found that a vaginally applied dose of estradiol (an estrogen proxy) resulted in systemic estradiol levels in the body 10 to 80 times greater compared to the same dose given orally. So, you should really know what the heck is in the products you use around the vagina.

The whole truth.

Right now, some companies tell you a little bit about what’s in their products. While tampon and pad manufacturers aren’t required to disclose ingredients, many do include some basic information on their packages about the ingredients — unless they use fragrance. A ‘fragrance’ in a product can be made up of 50-200 different ingredients, many for which health data simply doesn’t exist. This black box means that you could be exposing your body to fragrance ingredients without even knowing it.
We can do better.
Forward-thinking companies are already doing the right thing for women by voluntarily disclosing the ingredients used in their products. And leaders like Seventh Generation are taking the extra step to advocate for transparency industry-wide by co-sponsoring a rally in May.

Together, on May 23, women concerned about their health stood alongside business leaders and told Congress that we have the right to know what’s in the products we use so intimately. Congress can do their part by enacting a very simple, common-sense law. While May 23 has passed, we can still use our voices to get the message across. We can still share our concerns and share our thoughts thru blogs and social medias. I truly believe this is something every women out there who uses tampons or pads should not only research for themselves but start conversations about.

Tell your congressperson you have the right to know what’s in your tampons and pads. Period. TAKE ACTION!

Buzz Away Extreme Natural Insect Repellent towelettes

I received Buzz Away Extreme Natural Repellent from MomsMeet to try out and discuss with a few of my mom friends. Buzz Away Extreme Natural Repellent is a Deet-free, chemical free, natural insect repellent that is safe for the entire family. I received both the towelettes and the environmentally friendly non-aerosol spray. It is used to repelle against mosquitoes and ticks so long as you reapply every 3.5 hours and 2 hours for ticks.

Honestly I wanted to love this product but I just didn’t. In my opinion the individual towelettes had an overwhelming unpleasant scent of lemongrass. However, one of my mom friends stated she mostly smelled cedarwood. Either way we all agreed it wasn’t very appealing and left a lingering scent. I’m not sure if it was just the package we received or if the towelettes are truly like this but they were sticky and we had to really rub in the product. I really didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t apply it to my children’s hands. I understand that it’s a bug repellent but bugs don’t discriminate hands. Mosquitos will still bite your hands and ticks will still latch on. Over all Buzz Away Extreme Natural Insect Repellent was just not the product for me or my mom friends. However if you’d still like to check this product out I definitely encourage it, it did have an overwhelming great response and has 5 stars on MomsMeet.com.

7Up Summer Party

I had a blast hosting the 7Up HouseParty and having my girls over. We had a lot of fun making cocktails and the kids were super excited to just be able to drink soda. HouseParty sent me a huge box of goodies that included a small cooler, 7Up logo cups, frisbees, glasses, and two coupons for a 2iter of 7Up. I bought a few extra items at Kroger to make the cocktails/mocktails and we had an early dinner. Here are a few pictures of the set up and the girls.

Mott’s® 100% Juice Pouches

I recently received Mott’s® 100% Juice Pouches from MyMagazine Sharing Network and I have to say my kiddos really enjoyed them. I of course had to get one to try out for myself and it immediately took me back to my childhood days. I remember always drinking apple juice out of those little boxes or in those weird pouches at school for breakfast. Those were the first memories I thought of while drinking Mott’s® 100% Juice Pouches with my girls, super nostalgic.

I love the fact that Mott’s® 100% Juice Pouches provide 1-1/2 servings of fruit per pouch. Sometimes it’s hard to squeeze in every single nutrient your child needs, especially if the day just turned hectic. I definitely have been guilty of skipping food groups to get in a quick meal. I also love that my toddler can get all her juice out of the pouch, unlike a box or sippi cup. All she has to do is squeezes a little and she’s fine, instead of turning it upside or fighting with a box. I also like the pouch design because it’s easier to put into my bag on the go, unlike a bottle or box that’s conformed to one shape. I don’t mind my kiddos asking for this apple juice to have with a snack or lunch and will be buying these in the near future!

NESTEA® Single Serve

I received new NESTEA® Single Serve from MyMagazine Sharing Network (I’ll leave a link for you below for those of you more interested in their program) and tbh while I love NESTEA®, I wasn’t impressed. I do love the new shape to the bottle which allows you to get a better grip while you drink it, but I wasn’t a fan of the flavor over all.

I received two coupons and tried NESTEA® Real Brewed Green Tea and Slightly Sweet Black Tea both of which I purchased at Kroger. I went back and also bought their Lemon Flavored Tea to try. My favorite one was the NESTEA® Slightly Sweet Black Tea, I just loved how smooth the tea was and it was just the right amount of sweetness. I can see myself pouring it into a nice tall glass full of ice and maybe add some lemon wedges and would definitely buy more in the future. The NESTEA® Lemon was okay, I felt like I had to add sugar to it because something was still missing. It was just lacking in sweetness but the lemon flavor was definitely present, it just wasn’t enough for me personally. My least favorite was NESTEA® Organic Slightly Sweet Green Tea, yuck is all I can say. By far the grossest green tea I’ve ever come across. I took maybe two sips and that was it, there was no way I could drink that and I like green tea. It was very bitter and while it claims to be slightly sweet, to me there was no presence of any sweetness. It also left an after taste, over all this was a complete negative for me. I guess when I think of Iced Tea (in any form) that Southern Girl part of me kicks in and expects a certain level of flavor; but don’t knock it till you try it, everybody’s taste buds are different 😉.

O.B Original Super

When I accepted the o.b.® Original™ Super Mission from Smiley360 I wasn’t sure what to expect. Not only was it my first Smiley Mission but it was an aplicator free tampon. Ouch was all I could think of or wow that’s going to be messy. In my package I was to expect a 40-ct sample of o.b.® Original™ Super tampons, five coupons to share, an o.b.® educational booklet, and a Smiley sharing guide. It didn’t take that long for my package to arrive and everything but the o.b.® educational booklet was in it. I was actually a little disappointed about not getting the educational booklet, I was curious to see what information would have been in it. Was it like for first time tampon users or for someone brand new to the menstrual world? I guess I’ll never know.

So what do I actually think about o.b.® Original™ Super tampons? Well, my first impression is how small the box is that they come in, usually tampon boxes are long or wide. With the o.b.® Original™ box you could probably put the entire thing in a good sized purse or diaper bag if you need to. I honestly can’t believe there are actually 40 super tampons in there. The tampon itself is about the size of pinky in width and height. It has a small, thin amount of plastic protecting it and is easily opened. It’s extremely smooth and soft and has a groove all around in which they state are Fluid-Lock grooves for leak protection (something every girl needs). There is an umbrella shape at the bottom to help insert and a long draw string to help assist you to remove it. The bottom of the tampon is where you actually place your finger to insert it. The string is pulled out and then moved from side to side to widen the bottom just enough to put your finger and place it. I really love how small and discreet the tampon and box itself is. I can really appreciate the fact that they’d make it almost unnoticed. Not everyone is comfortable walking around with bright colored tampons or long ones either. I myself don’t care but I can see where in certain places or occasions you’d want to be discreet and slip away to handle your business.

When it came time to use o.b® Original™ Super tampons, I was a little nervous at first, but to be honest I had zero issues. It was however a little messy on my heavier days but other than that it was fine. It wasn’t painful in any way with out an applicator and easy to dispose of. And it lived up to its standards, zero leaks and comfortable. Overall I definitely recommend o.b® Original™ Super tampons or at least look into them and do a little more research.

Till Next Time,
Erika

My Very First HouseParty

My Add a Zing with TAJIN® House Party

If you don’t already know what HouseParty is, it’s basically a site for you to apply to host parties for products or brands you most likely already know about. Sometimes you might have never heard of the items or brands but I haven’t come across that yet. When you apply there are a few activities to get you recognized and then there’s a small wait to see if you were approved to host the party. Once approved you’ll invite your friends and family according to what the product is. The more you invite the better chances you have to host parties in the future, but also the quality of your party and whether or not you do the activities they have for you. In return they send you a package of goodies for you and your guest for the party. What I like about them is you get to choose and apply what parties you’d like to host and the brands are pretty interactive with you. Also who doesn’t love a reason to hang out with your friends and family.

So, onto my party!!! Since it was my first one I’m pretty good with how it turned out. While I knew the jiff of what was supposed to happen or what you’re going to do, it wasn’t until I received the package from Tajin & HouseParty and the activities went live that I really knew what I got myself into. First things first, Tajin is a blend made from a select combination of world-class Mexican chilies, lime juice and sea salt that you use to add a zing to your food or beverages. Also, in my package there was an apron with the brand logo on it (which my toddler refuses to take off ) a hat, mini Tajin bottles to pass out to guests, Tajin rim salt, a recipe book and coupons to hand out. It also came with a full size Tajin bottle to make one of the recipes in the book. In the end I had a lot of fun and I actually really like Tajin, in my Michelada, on my corn, in marinade, and on fruit! It’s all yummo! I posted a few pictures of the party below along with a link that will take you to my profile page, till next time!
